Day 2 of the I-420 Pacific Coast Championship dawned with a moderate marine layer covering most of the coast in Southern California. There was some concern that the moderate breeze of Day 1 which started early in the day and held well into the late afternoon might not materialize – but the local weather forecast was promising a slightly later arrival of wind, but with a slight increase in pressure – 10 kts by noon-1pm………………..it did not disappoint.
The skippers meeting was postponed to wait for the wind to grace us with her presence, all the teams were ready to go, and at 1045 we left the dock feeling a 4-6 kt freshening westerly. Yesterday’s PRO Team of Judge Ryan and Mac Mace – both second generation Team USA I-420 Alumni, that did an excellent job pulling off 5 races Day 1 in shifty conditions, was replaced on Day 2 with Judge Ryan and his father – US I-420 Board Member – Hal Ryan in the start boat. Four additional races were run averaging 35 minutes each with Judge and Hal continually extending the length of the course as the breeze built to a steady 9-10 kts for the afternoon. At 1500 – per the Sailing Instructions – Cinderella’s Coach turned back into a pumpkin and racing was concluded for the day.
To add to the excitement, two teams were tied for first going into the last race (Race 9) with the winner of that race (between the two teams) likely taking home the win for the weekend. It was a nail biter down the last run to the reaching finish with only 10’ separating the two boats. Congratulation goes out to the women’s team of Lahrkamp/DelBello for winning the First Place Trophy – not only for the regatta, but also for the top finishing women’s team of the event. The women’s team of Thompson/Thompson finished a close Second Place with one point separating them from the leaders, and the men’s team of Hermus/Guerriero finished in Third Place with a solid performance for the weekend.
It was a good weekend for all, with many newer teams in the fleet and a few new team crew combinations training to get stronger for the upcoming US Youth Champs which starts next week. Thanks go out to Steve Keen and Sarah Lihan – without their help in getting the course set in the morning and making minor adjustments as the day progressed we could not have completed as many races. I want to send a special thanks to all the parents that jumped in to help on race committee, safety and shore management – without your willingness to jump in and help at a moment’s notice this all would have not happened.
